Victim Blaming
Victim Blaming is about blaming the survivor for their role in the incident. Some things to remember about victim blaming:
  • No matter what they were wearing, how much they had to drink, or whether they had a previously consensual relationship with the perpetrator, the victim should not be blamed. It is never the victim’s fault.
  • Victim blaming is a major reason suvivors coose not to report.
  • Many survivors are already grappling with feelings of guilt and shame for what has happened. Blaming the victim can reinforce such feelings.

Disbelief
Disbelief is about denying the incident happened.
  • False reports X%. Underreports Y%.
  • Don't play devils advocate with a survivor. The devil doesn't need more advocates.
  • Fear of not being believed is a major reason many survivors stay silent.
Excuses
Excuses are about dismissing, trivializing, or excusing the behavior.
  • Excuses allow perpetrators to avoid accountability and commit additional crimes.
  • There is no moral or ethical excuse for perpetrating sexual violence, even if it often goes un-regcognized, un-reported, or un-punished.
  • There is also no moral excuse for assisting in sexual violence, either by enabling the abuser or by knowingly allowing abuse to continue.
Inaction
Inaction is about reasons to not act.
  • Inaction means siding with the oppressor.
  • In many countries, especially the United States, the Legal process is inequal, and doesn't always represent a fair or outcome.
  • You don't have to act like the legal process... due process is separate... you just have to do your best with info you have and beleiveablity
